Mr. Emmett, a former professional boxer, prison officer and dog judge, began massaging to relieve his workmates’ back pain, and shoulder pain and sciatica pain in Mt Isa, Nth Queensland over 30 years ago, which led to his career as a therapist and teacher. He qualified as a massage therapy instructor in 1983 with the Queensland Association of Massage Therapists and a senior instructor in Bowen therapy in 1997. The product of working as a remedial and sports massage therapist is his system of therapy called the Emmett Technique. His method of achieving pain relief is via ‘neuromuscular release’ and involves reactivating nerve responses and restoring normal muscle movement.
The Emmett technique
The Emmett Technique is applied with either light touch at 2 holding points simultaneously or a one directional moves over specific locations on the body. The Emmett Technique corrects body alignment problems quickly, with minimal client pain and therapist effort. It isn’t physiotherapy, massage or Bowen, but rather a unique form of therapy and has earned him international attention as one of the rising stars in his field. “I have trained all kinds of therapists from medical practitioners, doctors, chiropractors, physiotherapists, acupuncturists, massage therapists, Bowen therapists and nurses”, he said. Currently, he is living his vision of making the course available to all remedial therapists who want it. His course has been endorsed by the Australian Association of Massage Therapists and the Bowen Therapists of Australia and is covered by all health professional insurers here in the UK.

Fellow Australian, orthodontist Geoff Stanton, ran the London marathon in 2007 using the Emmett Technique to relieve a leg problem. Dr Stanton attended the eight-hour EMM-Tech Short Course five weeks before attempting the 26 miles run. At the time he feared that tight Iliotibial bands in both legs would prevent him from training. In his training regime he stopped every 3 miles to free his legs, and went on to successfully complete the London marathon with only one pause at the 21 mile mark to release the tight muscles. Dr Stanton said he had learned “release points” for head, neck, legs and chest which he expected would be handy for helping his four young children with aches and pains”. Ross says that Dr Stanton’s experience illustrated the crux of this practice. “My job is to make people feel better”, he said.
Many admirers of the Emmett Technique say the point of difference over other therapies was that clients could expect to see a reduction in pain or discomfort BEFORE they left the appointment. Mr. Emmett says relieving lower back pain would typically take a lot of work using conventional massage, but with his technique it might be achieved in just a few minutes. “It’s short, sharp and to the point and if it doesn’t work, clients are referred on. For sports people, it is a quick treatment, with quick release and quick action which means less time off the field. For frail people, babies or others with restricted mobility the treatment is gentle and less intrusive that other forms of massage. I first taught my technique in the UK in 2007 and I am looking forward to returning to London in April 2012 to demonstrate it to massage therapists and others interested in extending their skills”.
